Size: 42 inches squareBlue Bell Baby BlanketByAnn V. Gallentine
Materials: #10.5 U.S. knitting needles, 5½ 3.5 ounce skeins worsted weight yarn (the original was made with 50% nylon, 50% acrylic Berroco Comfort yarn), 2 stitch markers, large eye sewing needle
Gauge: 4 sts, 6 rows = 1 inch in st st
Notes:
Blanket has a shell pattern border with a st st center. It can be made entirely with the shell stitch, thus eliminating the st st center. This will require more yarn.
The blanket size can be changed by increasing or decreasing the number of stitches cast on in multiples of 9.
Special abbreviations
Ssssk: {slip, slip, slip, slip, knit** Slip 4 sts from left to right needle, one at a time. Insert left needle into front of sts and knit. (Similar to ssk, but with 3 sts decreased instead of 1 st decreased)

Rows 261-265: K entire row (garter stitch).

Weave in ends with yarn needle.
TIPS:
Circular needle is needed to accommodate large number of stitches.
Use stitch markers to mark beginning and end of each repeat of 18 stitches.

Counting four-row bands is generally easier than counting rows. Each band ends in a ridge as viewed from the right side.

Now that you have the pattern, over the next several blog posts I will describe how I developed it, in case you want to try this for yourself.
Here are the steps I used to develop my pattern:
1) Choose yarn and desired finished size
2) Calculate how many stitches wide it should be
3) Figure out how many rows it should be, plus the color pattern
4) Determine how much yarn to buy
